With screen resolutions increasing more and more these days, computer users need to set higher pixel densities in order to increase the size of text elements. In the past, Windows operated in 96 dpi, but now 120 dpi (or higher) is quickly taking over.

For software, this brings the challenge of scaling the interface elements (usually designed in pixel units) to the corresponding ratio. In general, the operating system provides support for this, but that support can be exploited only if different basic rules are followed. For those interested in details, the keyword is "DPI awareness".
